The One Planet story is a fascinating one. It began as a merger between three designers and manufacturers of outdoor gear. Today One Planet is a small but thriving company that employs approximately 30 dedicated people. It is very much a hands-on operation, with everything from design, to production, to sales managed from the Melbourne factory and office. This allows true control over quality, the company’s direction, customer satisfaction, and just about everything else.

Recently a group of OEG staff were invited by owner and Managing Director, Andrew King, to visit the factory and observe the production of the backpacks and tents as well as many other outdoor products that see 42,000 participants safely enjoying the outdoors through OEG programs.

The one thing that stands out the most about One Planet is the passion of the people that work there. Passion about the products, the people and the planet. Andrew’s mantra is “make it good, make it work and make it last.” His philosophy is to over-engineer products, which is matched by the durability of the materials and construction methods. The care and attention that the staff provide while making the products is astounding. Andrew is a kind and compassionate owner; from allowing his team to rotate through different production roles, to having regular input from his workers into the design and production of the goods, right through to providing morning tea and lunch for his staff every day. The pride that his team displays is clearly evident.

One Planet makes gear that lasts, and if it doesn’t Andrew will gladly welcome it back to fix so it does! Impressively, his factory was the first carbon-neutral factory in the outdoor sector (since 2005), with any emissions being offset via Greenfleet (through planting trees) and he leads the way in sourcing ethically-produced down for their sleeping bags.

The innovation that One Planet has brought to the outdoor industry extended to the creation of Camplist (; an online store that provides suitable, affordable and high-quality gear for school outdoor education programs. A vast majority of parents from OEG client schools use this fantastic service as it offers 15-30% discounts off RRP, a hire shop for boots and sleeping bags, all with the ease of orders sent directly to the purchaser/hirer.

The Outdoor Education Group have been working in partnership with One Planet for many years now and will continue well into the future. Andrew brings 30+ years of experience to the design and production of quality outdoor gear that will last a lifetime.
